So, is there a best time to visit Costa Rica? No – but you may just discover that the month you visit is best for something!

Welcome to your new favorite Costa Rica weather guide – one that actually helps you plan a trip you’re excited about.

We’re diving into Costa Rica weather by month (yes, all twelve), because the truth is, there’s no bad time to visit. There are just different kinds of magic. From hot and dry days perfect for beach hopping to misty green seasons that bring out the wildest sunsets and lushest landscapes, we’re breaking down what to expect, what to pack, and what kind of unforgettable experiences you can line up for every month of the year.

This is your no-fluff, real-talk version of a weather guide, built for travelers who want to make the most of every forecast.

January: Sunny Skies and Peak Vibes

Weather Forecast: ☀️🌡️☀️

Costa Rica weather in January

January is Costa Rica’s summer – and it shows. Skies are often blue-for-days, the sun is on full blast, and the rain has (mostly) packed up. It’s one of the most popular months to visit – and it earns the spotlight.

  • Pacific Coast: No rain. Expect hot, dry days with highs in the upper 80s to low 90s°F (30–34°C). Conditions are ideal for beachgoers, adventure-seekers, and anyone ready for a vitamin D boost.

  • Central Valley: Warm, breezy days and cool nights – perfect for sleeping with the windows open.

  • Exceptions: Arenal and the Caribbean coast are still in their rainy season, so pack accordingly if you’re venturing east or inland.

What to Pack: Light, breathable layers are your best friends. Swimsuits, linen or moisture-wicking clothing, a sunhat, reef-safe sunscreen, sunglasses, and a reusable water bottle will go the distance. Bring sturdy shoes for hiking or zip-lining. No need for a jacket unless you’re visiting a high-altitude spot.

As always, pack ample sunblock and your bathing suit!

Can’t-Miss Experiences: January is one of the most popular months for travel to Costa Rica, thanks to the incredible weather – especial in contrast to the dismal, Arctic-blast white-out that’s happening up north.

  • Surf’s Up: The Pacific coast sees consistent, well-defined swells from the north – ideal for surfers of all levels. Tamarindo and other hotspots can be crowded, but the vibe is festive and the wave quality is top-tier.

  • Sea Turtle Hatchings: On select beaches, especially along the Nicoya Peninsula, you may catch olive ridley hatchlings making their way to sea – a once-in-a-lifetime sight. Note: This isn’t nesting season, but hatching season!

  • Sunsets Galore: Clear skies = guaranteed sunset views. Whether from the beach or your private pool terrace, you’ll want a front-row seat by 5:30pm.

  • Wildlife Adventures: This dry stretch is a great time for national park hikes and guided wildlife tours – animals are often easier to spot in less-dense foliage.

February: Dry, Dreamy, and Still Gorgeous

Weather Forecast: ☀️🌴🌅

Costa Rica weather in February

February picks up right where January leaves off – bright, dry, and made for beach living. In many parts of the country, it’s one of the most consistent months weather-wise.

  • Pacific Coast: Daytime temps hover in the low 90s°F (32–34°C), with near-zero chance of rain. It’s perfect weather for water sports, lazy beach days, or shaded patio lounging.

  • Central Valley: Sunny and fresh, with cool evenings that make post-adventure relaxation even better.

  • Exceptions: February is still rainy season in Arenal – pack layers and prepare for afternoon showers if that’s your destination.

What to Pack: Keep it light and sun-ready: swimsuits, tank tops, shorts, sandals, and something breathable for evenings. Sunglasses and reef-safe sunscreen are essential, as are water shoes if you plan to explore rocky tide pools or waterfalls.

As always, pack ample sunblock and your bathing suit!

Can’t-Miss Experiences: As far as Costa Rica weather by month, February is a dream for optimal weather without having to think twice about backup plans.

  • Surf Conditions: Consistent swells continue along the Pacific. This month sees excellent surf conditions – clean, glassy waves in the morning and a steady rhythm throughout the day. Surf competitions often pop up during this stretch, especially around Tamarindo.

  • Sailing and Snorkeling: The ocean is calm, visibility is superb, and marine life is active. Great time for catamaran tours or exploring reefs with a guide.

  • Early Morning Hikes: Take advantage of cooler mornings for waterfall hikes or visits to national parks. With dry trails and open canopies, wildlife viewing is at its peak.

  • Festivals and Community Events: Many towns host local events during February – ask us about live music, farmers’ markets, or artisan fairs.

March: Sunshine, Swells & a Hint of Breeze

Weather Forecast: ☀️🌊🌬️

March is Costa Rica’s summer in full swing – hot, dry, and sun-drenched almost from coast to coast. With clear skies and warm ocean temps, it’s a dream month for outdoor adventure, beach days, and serious surf time. This is a golden hour for both weather and outdoor adventure.

  • Pacific Coast: Expect classic dry-season weather – sunny days, minimal humidity, and highs in the upper 80s to low 90s°F (31–34°C). Breezes off the ocean help take the edge off the heat.

  • Central Valley: Milder temperatures with clear skies and crisp evenings, perfect for coffee tours and volcano day trips.

  • Exceptions: It’s still rainy season in Arenal, which is lush and green, with higher humidity and afternoon showers.

What to Pack: Light, breathable clothing, plenty of sun protection (sunscreen, sunglasses, a wide-brimmed hat), and beachwear are essentials. If you're visiting rainforest zones or Arenal, bring a light rain jacket just in case.

As always, pack ample sunblock and your bathing suit!

Can’t-Miss Experiences: March is made for sun, surf, and exploration – often with fewer crowds than the post-holiday rush of January and February.

  • Surf Report: Northern Pacific beaches still benefit from steady swells, particularly on offshore mornings. Wave conditions are excellent for all skill levels, and surf schools are in full swing.

  • Beach Days & Sunset Dips: With long, sunlit afternoons and minimal cloud cover, this is a prime month for spending the entire day on the sand – or the sea.

  • Wildlife Watching: Drier trails mean better access to inland parks like Rincón de la Vieja and Palo Verde. Keep an eye out for monkeys, coatis, toucans, and nesting birds.

  • Semana Santa (Holy Week): Depending on the calendar, Easter may fall in March. Expect lively local traditions, parades, and – if you’re near the coast – packed beaches toward the end of the month.

April: The Gentle Turn Toward Green

Weather Forecast: 🌤️🌿☀️

Costa Rica weather in April

April straddles the line between seasons. Most of the month still feels like summer – hot, dry, and golden – but the landscape begins to hint at change. You might catch the first scattered showers late in the month, especially in inland areas.

  • Pacific Coast: For most of April, expect clear skies and warm temps in the high 80s to low 90s°F (31–33°C). By the final week, there’s a slight uptick in humidity and the occasional surprise shower, often in the late afternoon or overnight.

  • Central Valley: Conditions remain mild and pleasant, with more noticeable hints of greenery returning to the hillsides toward month’s end.

  • Exceptions: Arenal finishes out its rainy-season pattern, and the Caribbean coast begins its transition to drier days.

What to Pack: Keep it light and summery, but it’s smart to pack a light rain layer or travel umbrella just in case – especially if you’re exploring higher elevations or traveling in late April. Footwear with traction is helpful for waterfall hikes or rainforest trails.

As always, pack ample sunblock and your bathing suit!

Can’t-Miss Experiences: April is a sweet spot – full of sunny days and fewer crowds, with just a hint of seasonal shift.

  • Surf Update: Conditions stay solid, with clean Pacific swells and occasional larger waves rolling in. More advanced surfers will enjoy the challenge, while beginners can still find mellow breaks.

  • Waterfall Reawakening: With a touch more moisture in the air and high in the mountains, waterfalls like Llanos de Cortez or Montezuma Falls begin to swell again – great for hiking and swimming.

  • Unforgettable Sunsets: April’s dry skies and rising humidity create surreal sunsets, especially along the Pacific coast. Think molten orange and lavender skies.

  • Semana Santa (if in April): If Easter lands this month, plan ahead – it’s one of Costa Rica’s busiest travel weeks, full of local energy, celebrations, and coastal family gatherings.

May: Rain Arrives… But Just Barely

Weather Forecast: ⛅🌦️ ☀️

May marks the official start of the green season on Costa Rica’s Pacific side, but rain doesn’t pour in overnight. For much of the month, it’s still mostly sunny with the occasional late afternoon shower, often lasting less than an hour.

And when it does rain? Well, it’s the perfect time to enjoy the storm roll in from the safe vantage point of your home’s beautiful, covered patio (or the covered jacuzzi, if you’re staying at Compass House!).

  • Pacific Coast: Expect sunny mornings and building humidity. Showers may roll in late in the day, especially by mid-to-late May. Temperatures hover in the mid to high 80s°F (29–31°C).

  • Central Valley: Pleasant days with increasingly verdant landscapes. Showers tend to be brief but refreshing.

  • Exceptions: Arenal is well into its dry season now and, if you strike a bit of luck, you may also hit dry weather in Monteverde.

What to Pack: Your regular summer gear still works, but now’s definitely the time to add a light rain jacket or travel umbrella to your bag. Waterproof footwear or sturdy sandals are smart for wet trails.

As always, pack ample sunblock and your bathing suit! Even during the rainier months, you’ll find that Tamarindo still spends many hours at the beach and in the water.

Can’t-Miss Experiences: May is a month of balance – sunshine, greenery, and the first real taste of the wet season's beauty.

  • Surf Scene: Southern swells pick up, especially on the southern Nicoya Peninsula. Expect bigger waves and more power – ideal for intermediate to advanced surfers.

  • Rainforest Revival: The dry-season dust gets washed away, and Costa Rica’s landscapes begin to pop in every shade of green. May is an excellent time for photographers and nature lovers.

  • Waterfalls & Wildlife: Rain brings new energy to rivers and cascades. Wildlife becomes more active, and birdwatching picks up again.

  • Fewer Travelers: While May is beautiful, it’s often overlooked – meaning more space on the beach, quieter trails, and better availability for tours and reservations.

June: Green Season in Full Swing

Weather Forecast: 🌦️🌴🌈

Costa Rica weather in June

By June, the rainy season has officially settled into a rhythm: sunny mornings followed by dramatic, beautiful afternoon showers that usually pas quickly. Don’t worry – this is one of Costa Rica’s best-kept secrets. With the right attitude (and a covered terrace), June is a magical time to visit. (Don’t tell anyone, but this is one of our favorite months of the year!)

  • Pacific Coast: Expect daytime highs in the low-to-mid 80s°F (28–30°C), with bright mornings and afternoon rain showers that usually pass quickly.

  • Central Valley: Slightly cooler, with frequent but manageable rainfall. Lushness returns to the hillsides in full force.

  • Exceptions: Arenal’s dry season is in full swing. But don’t bank on it: As one of the rainier regions of the country (green green, year-round), it could still rain.

What to Pack: You’ll appreciate having packed a waterproof layer, quick-dry clothing, and shoes with traction. Bring a dry bag for electronics and zip-top bags for essentials during day trips.

As always, pack ample sunblock and your bathing suit!

Can’t-Miss Experiences: Green season travelers are rewarded with fewer crowds, lush scenery, and dramatic skies.

  • Surf Report: This is the start of peak swell season for advanced surfers. Bigger, heavier waves consistently roll in from the south – a thrill for seasoned riders.

  • Adventure Time: Rivers begin rising, which means whitewater rafting, canyoning, and waterfall rappelling are at their prime.

  • Rainy Day Strategy: Plan outdoor activities for early in the day. Save spa visits, cooking classes, and café stops for the afternoon.

  • Sunset Spectacle: With the rain, sunsets become epic is the most dramatic of ways – clouds scattering every hue and shade of light.

July: A Green Season Intermission

Weather Forecast: ⛅🌿🌊

Costa Rica weather in July

In much of Costa Rica, July brings what locals call the veranillo or “little summer” – a short dry spell within the rainy season. The rain doesn’t always vanish, but showers ease up, especially on the Pacific coast, creating a welcome window of sunny, stable weather.

  • Pacific Coast: Drier than June, especially around Guanacaste and the Nicoya Peninsula. Temps in the mid-80s°F (29°C), with more sun and less mud.

  • Central Valley: Comfortable temperatures and reduced rainfall make it a great time for volcano visits and coffee country escapes.

  • Exceptions: Arenal is still in its drier pattern.

What to Pack: Stick with your rainy season wardrobe, but expect to wear your sunglasses more often this month. Layers are still key for changing conditions.

As always, pack ample sunblock and your bathing suit!

Can’t-Miss Experiences: July is a favorite for families, wildlife lovers, and travelers looking for balance.

  • Surf Watch: Wave consistency remains excellent. Intermediate and advanced surfers will enjoy the southern swell push, while beginner beaches still offer mellow breaks.

  • Sea Turtle Nesting: On select beaches, especially along the Nicoya Peninsula, you may catch mass olive ridley turtle nesting events, known as arribadas.

  • Nature at Its Best: National parks are vivid green and bursting with wildlife. Keep an eye out for monkeys, toucans, and other rain-loving wildlife along the coast.

  • Family Travel: With school breaks in both Costa Rica and North America, July is a popular time for family vacations – many tours and guides cater to kids and multi-generational groups.

  • Whale Spotting: On the southern Pacific coast, humpback whales from the Southern Hemisphere begin to arrive. Sightings can start as early as mid-July.

August: Lush, Local & Full of Life

Weather Forecast: 🌦️🐋🍃

Costa Rica weather in September

August stays firmly in the green season groove – morning sunshine followed by refreshing afternoon rain showers. It’s a vibrant, alive time to visit Costa Rica, especially for travelers who want fewer crowds and a deeper connection with nature.

  • Pacific Coast: Rain returns more consistently, but it still tends to fall late in the day. Expect daytime temps in the low-to-mid 80s°F (28–30°C).

  • Central Valley: Rainfall increases a bit but doesn’t overwhelm. Expect misty mornings and cozy, cool evenings.

  • Exceptions: Arenal and the Caribbean remain drier, though with mostly lush landscapes and high humidity.

What to Pack: Stick to light, quick-dry layers, a dependable rain jacket, and waterproof shoes. It’s a great time for a backpack with a rain cover and waterproof storage for cameras and phones.

As always, pack ample sunblock and your bathing suit!

Can’t-Miss Experiences: If you like your adventures with a side of solitude and green beauty, August delivers.

  • Surf Snapshot: Swells stay strong, with southern breaks in full swing. Lineups are less crowded – perfect for those chasing clean sets with more space.

  • Turtle Nesting: On the Nicoya Peninsula, olive ridley sea turtles begin nesting in earnest. Playa Ostional is a standout spot for mass arribadas.

  • Humpback Whales: This is prime whale-watching season on the Pacific coast, especially in places like Uvita and the Osa Peninsula.

  • Rainy Day Rewards: Spend a rainy afternoon at a thermal hot spring, or take a long lunch at a jungle-view café and watch the clouds roll in. There’s a reason locals love this time of year.

September: Wet, Wild & Wonderfully Quiet

Weather Forecast: 🌧️🌿🐢

Costa Rica weather in September

September is Costa Rica’s green season at full volume – wetter, yes, but also wilder, greener, and far less crowded. If you’re looking for solitude, lush landscapes, required down time, and a deeper connection with nature, this might just be your perfect month.

  • Pacific Coast: Expect daily rain, often in the afternoon or evening, though downpours can be heavy and occasionally stretch throughout the afternoon. Highs hover around 82–84°F (28°C).

  • Central Valley: Cooler and rainier, with misty mornings and peaceful cloud forest vibes.

  • Exceptions: The Caribbean coast is actually drier in September – a bit of a weather reversal that makes it an ideal time to visit Cahuita or Puerto Viejo.

What to Pack: Rain gear is non-negotiable: waterproof shoes, a solid rain jacket, and dry bags for your electronics. But don’t forget a swimsuit – beaches are still in play during blue-skied, sunny mornings.

As always, pack ample sunblock and your bathing suit! Even in September and October (the rainiest months), you’ll still spend plenty of time in the pool, on the sand, and in the ocean. And when a shower blows in, there are plenty of shops and restaurants that line the beach – perfect places to order some refreshment as you wait out the rain! And once the rain passes, you can jump back in the water!

Can’t-Miss Experiences: September is for those who embrace the elements and want Costa Rica mostly to themselves.

  • Arribada Alert: Mass turtle nesting events continue at Playa Ostional – a bucket list experience you’ll never forget!

  • Whale Watching: Southern humpback whales are still around and active through September.

  • Photography Dream: Overcast skies and moody clouds bring out the saturated greens and dramatic jungle textures – ideal for landscape and wildlife shots.

  • Empty Beaches: With fewer tourists, you’ll have plenty of space to explore tide pools, coastal trails, and surf breaks (though conditions are best for advanced surfers this time of year).

October: Peak Green Season Magic

Weather Forecast: 🌧️🌺☕

Costa Rica weather in October

October is the wettest month on Costa Rica’s Pacific slope – and the driest on the Caribbean. This flip-flop makes it a great time to explore regions that stay off the beaten path, or to cozy up with comfort food, waterfalls, and hot springs.

  • Pacific Coast: Expect frequent, sometimes intense rainfall, especially in southern zones. Morning sun is frequent, but many days are overcast. Highs range from 80–83°F (27–28°C).

  • Central Valley: Rainy and cool – ideal for hot coffee, local markets, and a scenic tour through coffee country.

  • Exceptions: The Caribbean coast is in its summer moment – warm, sunny, and dry. Think snorkeling, beachcombing, and vibrant Afro-Caribbean culture.

What to Pack:Full rain setup and a sense of adventure. Bring light layers, bug spray, waterproof shoes, and a flexible schedule in case of a serious storm. But don’t worry, even in October, all of our activities still go out. It just cools you off! The only exception is when there are heavy thunderstorms; your safety is paramount.

As always, pack ample sunblock and your bathing suit! (Yes, even in October! This is Costa Rica, after all!)

Can’t-Miss Experiences:Don’t let the forecast fool you – October is full of quiet wonders.

  • Caribbean Calling: October is the time to visit Cahuita, Puerto Viejo, or Tortuguero. Snorkeling visibility improves, and local culture shines during the lull in tourism.

  • Coffee Tours: Coffee harvest begins in many areas – a perfect excuse to dive deep into Costa Rica’s most beloved golden bean.

  • Waterfall Wonderland: Rivers are flowing and waterfalls are roaring. Try a guided hike or horseback ride to some of the country’s lesser-known cascades.

  • Off-Season Luxury: Resorts and homes often offer their best rates this time of year. Fewer guests mean more personalized service and a deeper sense of calm.

November: The Shift Toward Sunshine

Weather Forecast: 🌤️🌿🦜

Costa Rica weather in November

This is one of our favorite times in Costa Rica: everything is still lush, but the weather is turning, wildlife is active, and the pace is still wonderfully relaxed.

  • Pacific Coast: Rain starts to taper off, especially mid-to-late month. Expect mostly dry mornings, with occasional afternoon or evening showers. Highs rise to 85°F (29°C).

  • Central Valley: Pleasant, springlike days and cooler nights. Showers become less frequent.

  • Exceptions: The Caribbean transitions back to its wetter pattern. Arenal and Monteverde start getting a little green and moody – ideal for rainforest and cloud forest experiences.

What to Pack: Rain gear is still smart early in the month, but you’ll likely reach for your sunglasses more often. Swimsuits, breathable layers, and hiking shoes round out the list.

As always, pack ample sunblock and your bathing suit!

Can’t-Miss Experiences: November is a sweet spot: part green season, part dry season, all beauty.

  • Wildlife Watching: Monkeys, migrating birds, and iguanas  – all easy to spot in the brightening forests. Mating and nesting seasons make wildlife especially active.

  • Turtle Hatching: Along the Nicoya coast, baby turtles begin their march to the sea. Witnessing a sunrise hatchling release is pure magic.

  • Surf’s Up: November offers consistent waves with fewer people in the water – ideal for beginners or those seeking space.

  • Pre-Holiday Peace: Before the holiday masses arrive in December, November offers a quieter, more local version of paradise.

December: Welcome to Summer

Weather Forecast: ☀️ 🌬️🎄

December is the start of Costa Rica’s dry season – known locally as verano (summer) – and one of the most beautiful months of the year. Early December still feels lush from recent rains; by mid-month, the skies are mostly clear, the sun is shining, and the festive energy is rising. The Santa Ana winds (known locally as Christmas breezes) often roll in toward the end of the month.

  • Pacific Coast: Dry season arrives in full by mid-December. Expect sunny days, low humidity, and highs in the upper 80s°F (30–32°C).

  • Central Valley: Warm and dry, with brilliant flowers blooming and cool evenings – perfect for al fresco dining.

  • Exceptions: Arenal and the Caribbean are back into the full rainy/rainier season swing.

What to Pack: Light clothing, reef-safe sunscreen, sunglasses, and beachwear. A light jacket for higher elevations is still a good idea. Book tours and stays early – this is peak travel season.

As always, pack ample sunblock and your bathing suit!

Can’t-Miss Experiences: Costa Rica ends the year on a high note – full of celebration, color, and clear skies.

  • Holiday Cheer: Towns decorate with lights and nativity scenes. Beach towns begin to buzz with end-of-year joy, and firework shows light up the skies.

  • Sunset Central: Dry air + skies with just a touch of clouds = golden hour perfection. December sunsets are famous for a reason!

  • Surf, Sand & Smiles: Perfect beach days, ideal surf for all levels, and water that stays warm well into the evening.

  • Tropical Christmas: Palm trees, tropical fruits, and open-air fiestas – December in Costa Rica offers a holiday season unlike any other.
