Arenal and Tamarindo vacation

Despite being smaller than the state of West Virginia – that’s under 20,000 square miles – Costa Rica has a way of making you feel like you've taken five vacations in one. But for travelers who just want the best of both jungle and beach, of mountain and coast, of mist and sun, nothing beats a half-and-half itinerary – a trip that begins in the lush, misty mountains of Arenal Volcano and ends on the golden shores of Tamarindo.

This unique blend of volcano hikes and beach days, hot springs and catamarans, sloths and sailfish is more than the best of all worlds; it’s a perfect balance of all that Costa Rica has to offer, wrapped into one time-efficient package. A go-to for travelers who want to explore Costa Rica’s wild side, then relax in style, we’ve pulled together a sample Arenal and Tamarindo vacation – complete with what to do where, how to pack, and what you’ll love most about this two-part adventure.

Recommendation: Visit Arenal First (Why It’s a Smart Move)

Arenal Volcano Costa Rica

There’s no wrong way to do a half-and-half itinerary, but most travelers agree that there is a better one: mountains (and the volcano) first, then beach. It’s not just about personal preference – most seasoned travelers (and Tamarindo locals) agree that starting with Big Adventure and ending with coastal relaxation is the sweet spot.

At Arenal Volcano – officially, La Fortuna is the town, although you’ll often hear people simply say “Arenal,” even thought that can get confusing, as there’s an actual town of “Nuevo Arenal” – your days are action-packed: you’ll hike ancient lava fields, cross hanging bridges high in the rainforest canopy, soar high-adrenaline ziplines, soak in hot springs, and scan the treetops for sloths.

After a few days of jungle treks and high-octane activity, you’ll be ready for Tamarindo’s beachside hammocks, spa days, catamarans, and cold drinks by the pool. But the opposite? Well, it might be a challenge to drag  yourself away from the sand, the pool, and your sun-splashed, ocean-view terrace, in exchange for packed days and physical exertion.

What to Do Where: Mountain vs. Beach Experiences

They may be just a few hours apart, but there are some pretty significant differences between what you can see, do, and experience in Arenal and Tamarindo. As such, we recommend planning wisely, so you don’t miss out on any of your bucket-list moments.

Arenal Volcano: The Jungle Playground

Arenal hot springs Costa Rica

Arenal Volcano and La Fortuna all about lush rainforest, up-close wildlife, and one of the world’s most perfect volcanic cones. Built around the town of La Fortuna, this high-adventure hotspot is one of the country’s best for eco-adventures and high-ticket items you won’t find at the coast.

The best way to plan your Arenal itinerary is with a one-on-one conversation, so we can help you identify your must-sees and must-dos, and then pair them with either the mountains or the coast. That said, here are a few of our favorite Arenal-area activities:

  • Volcano hikes and scenic viewpoints at Arenal Volcano National Park

  • Therapeutic hot springs and natural thermal rivers

  • Hanging bridges suspended high above the jungle canopy

  • Blue waterfalls, like the iconic La Fortuna Falls

  • Lake sports, including windsurfing, SUP, and boat tours

  • Wildlife watching, especially for sloths, poison dart frogs, many bird species, and butterflies

  • Zip-lining, whitewater rafting, waterfall rappelling, and other adrenaline activities

Pro tip: If sloths are high on your wish list, this is your chance. You won’t find them in the wild near Tamarindo.

Tamarindo: The Beachside Reboot

Tamarindo catamaran sailing Costa Rica

Once you've conquered the jungle, it’s time to slow down and soak up the coast. Tamarindo is equal parts beach town and luxury escape, and you’re going to love easing into its laid-back vibe, Pacific Ocean views, and coastal experiences.

Again, our Tamarindo recommendations will rely heavily on your personal preferences, but here’s some inspiration to get you started:

  • Catamaran sailing at sunset (often with dolphin sightings!)

  • Deep sea fishing – Tamarindo is world renowned for sailfish, mahi-mahi, and marlin

  • Golfing at nearby championship courses

  • Snorkeling and scuba diving in nearby coves and islands

  • ATV tours along backcountry trails and beaches

  • Surfing or surf lessons, from beginner or advanced

  • Relaxing at the beach, by the pool, or with an in-villa massage

Arenal and Tamarindo Vacation: How to Pack for Two Climates (and Avoid Rookie Mistakes)

Costa Rica’s mountain and beach climates are distinct – and your suitcase should reflect that.

For Arenal, you’ll want:

  • Lightweight hiking clothes (moisture-wicking tops, quick-dry shorts or pants, quick-dry socks)

  • light rain jacket or poncho, year-round

  • Closed-toe shoes or hiking boots with traction

  • Water shoes for waterfalls and hot springs

  • A small backpack for day trips

  • A dry pack or waterproof pouches for rafting or boat trips

  • Insect repellent and lots of sunblock, as you should wear it every day, all day, year-round!

  • swimsuit for the hot springs

For Tamarindo, add in:

  • Swimwear and beach cover-ups

  • Flip-flops or sandals

  • Sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat

  • Light casual outfits for dinners and sunset strolls

Arenal to Tamarindo Travel: Making the Transition

Arenal and Tamarindo vacation transportation

The journey from Arenal to Tamarindo is surprisingly easy and incredibly scenic. If you opt for a private shuttle or rental car, expect the trip to take about 4 hours, depending on weather and traffic. You’ll wind through mountain roads, pass rural towns, and eventually descend into the dry tropical forests of Guanacaste.

Want to break up the drive? Consider a stop at Llanos de Cortés Waterfall or Rincón de la Vieja National Park, if you’re up for a longer detour. This part of your Arenal and Tamarindo vacation isn’t just transportation – it’s part of the adventure. Watch as the landscape shifts from misty rainforest to sunny savanna, and get ready to trade your hiking boots for flip-flops.

Don’t want to drive? Book a helicopter transfer, take a local flight (public or charter), or hire a driver. We’ll help you decide on the best choice for your travel group.

Build Your Costa Rica Mountain and Beach Itinerary

So how long should you stay in each place? We recommend a minimum 7–10 day trip to Costa Rica, with 3–4 nights in Arenal and 4–5 nights in Tamarindo. Here’s a sample breakdown:

Days 1–3: Arenal

  • Day 1: Arrive SJO or LIR, travel to Arenal, and end the day with a hot springs soak

  • Day 2: Hanging bridges + wildlife (including sloths!) spotting tour

  • Day 3: Volcano hike + waterfall swim, zip-lining or whitewater rafting

Days 4–7+: Tamarindo

  • Day 4: Travel to Tamarindo + beach day

  • Day 5: Catamaran cruise + snorkeling

  • Day 6: Fishing or ATV tour

  • Day 7: Golfing or spa day

  • Day 8+: Depart or extend your stay

This Costa Rica mountain and beach itinerary gives you enough time to dive deep into both environments without feeling rushed, and ensures you end your trip feeling relaxed and recharged – although you still won’t be ready to leave, by the time Day 10 rolls around!

FAQ (AKA, the Advice We Always Give)

in-villa spa services Tamarindo Costa Rica

How many nights should we spend in each location?

We usually recommend 3–4 nights in Arenal and 4–5 nights in Tamarindo, especially if you want a mix of adventure and relaxation. If you're tight on time, don’t cut down on enjoyment; swap in local flights or helicopter transfers to minimize your travel times, so you can squeeze the most out of your dual destinations.

Is it worth doing both Arenal and Tamarindo in one trip?

Definitely. The contrast between these two locations – mountain rainforest vs. Pacific coast – gives you a richer, more well-rounded Costa Rican experience. If you only stay in one, you’d miss out on a huge part of what makes the country special. (That said, there’s always your next trip…)

What kind of wildlife will we see in each place?

In Arenal, you’re likely to see sloths, monkeys, toucans, frogs, and even coatis or anteaters. In Tamarindo, you’ll see more marine life – think dolphins, sea turtles, rays, and colorful fish while snorkeling or sailing. Howler monkeys are also prevalent at the beach.

Is there a big difference in weather between Arenal and Tamarindo?

Yes and no. All of Costa Rica is tropical, so you won’t experience extreme temperature swings. That said, Arenal is wetter and cooler, especially in the evenings and during the rainy months. Tamarindo is sunnier and drier, especially from November to April. It’s always smart to check both forecasts and pack accordingly.

Do we need a 4x4 to drive between Arenal and Tamarindo?

Not usually – the main routes are well-paved. A regular sedan is fine for the Arenal to Tamarindo drive, especially in the dry season. That said, if you're planning any off-the-beaten-path adventures, a 4x4 can be a bonus, especially during the heavy rains of September and October.

Can we do the Arenal to Tamarindo travel leg by flight?

Yes – there are small regional flights between La Fortuna and Liberia or Tamarindo (about 1.5 hours from Tamarindo), although most of our travelers opt for a private transfer or self-drive, which offers more flexibility and lets you see more of the countryside. Time crunch or just can’t be bothered? We can also arrange for a helicopter transfer.

Speaking of flights, which international airport should we fly into?

This is a great question. The short answer is that Arenal/La Fortuna is equidistant (about 3 hours) to both the San José International Airport (SJO) and the Guanacaste International Airport (LIR), but Tamarindo is much closer to LIR – just 90 minutes vs. 4.5+ hours to SJO.

The easiest answer, therefore, is to book your round-trip ticket through the Guanacaste International Airport (LIR), unless there’s a benefit – better price, fewer connections, etc. – to flying into SJO and out of LIR. Alternately, if you’re stuck flying into SJO due to home country logistics, we can help arrange transportation to the San José area, via private transportation, regional air or charter plane, or helicopter transfer.

What Our Guests Love Most About Arenal and Tamarindo Vacations

After these half-and-half trips, the feedback we hear most often goes something like this:

  • “We’re so glad we did both!” The contrast between jungle and beach adds so much depth to your trip.

  • “Ending in Tamarindo was perfect.” After early mornings and mountain adventures, the beach delivers a welcome change of pace.

  • “Seeing a sloth/manta ray/nesting turtle/fill-in-the-blank was an unforgettable highlight.” And so was watching the sunset from a catamaran just a few days later.

  • “It felt like two vacations in one.” Enough said.
